In 1895, Pope Leo XIII granted the extraordinary privilege of gaining a plenary indulgence to anyone who , having fulfilled the obligations of Confession and Holy Communion, visited St. Mary’s Grotto and prayed for the pope’s intentions on certain Marian Feast Days.
